Threat intelligence for high-risk communities

Wednesday 2 October 14:00 - 15:00, Small Talks room

Martijn Grooten (Internews)

It's no news to anyone working in cybersecurity that journalists, activists and human rights defenders are prime targets of digital threats, with spyware like Pegasus and Predator or APT groups like Charming Kitten or Mustang Panda being just the tip of the iceberg. At the same time, many people and companies in the cybersecurity industry are very willing and eager to apply their analysis skills and insight for the common good. But what kind of threat intelligence do high-risk communities need? What pitfalls are there when it comes to supporting such groups? And do the usual ways of sharing threat information, such as IOCs and the ATT&CK matrix, work for these communities? These questions will be answered in this Small Talk, while there will also be plenty of opportunity to ask your own questions and come with suggestions.

NB it is highly recommended that you attend Runa Sandvik's opening keynote if you want to attend this Small Talk.

Martijn Grooten

In 2007, Martijn Grooten was a lapsed mathematician looking for a job when he joined Virus Bulletin as a web developer. He kind of liked this cybersecurity thing and stayed at Virus Bulletin until the end of 2019, the last six years as Editor. After leaving Virus Bulletin, he did some contract work in both the private and non-profit sector. Since the beginning of 2022, he has been working at Internews as a digital security technologist, supporting high-risk communities who face digital threats. He currently combines that with working as a threat intelligence researcher at Silent Push. He is also Coordinator at and co-founder of the Coalition of Stalkerware. He has previously spoken at conferences such as BlackHat, RSA, Nullcon, Botconf, TROOPERS and IRISSCON. He is very excited to return to the place where he discovered his love for all things cybersecurity.
