Arrests made in Poland and US, more expected.
A large operation carried out by the FBI against a phishing operation has resulted in a string of arrests. Four people are being held in the US and a further 13 in Poland, with searches also carried out in Romania, where more arrests are believed likely. It is thought that as many as 100,000 credit cards numbers could have been gathered by the gang.
The phishing gang based in Poland are believed to have targeted several financial institutions during the late summer of 2004, with attacks using trojans and spoofed websites designed to reap credit card data, as well as hacking into protected databases. Compromised bank accounts were then looted online or had data sold on to criminals in the US, who created fake cards using the stolen information. Raids were conducted in several states, with carding equipment seized and more arrests also expected in the next few days.
The Romanian side of the operation appears to be the source of keylogging trojans used in some of the scams. With several premises searched and at least three suspects questioned, police hope to be able to round up those involved there soon.
