Study reveals older people and women most likely to take charge of protecting their computer systems
A study by UK managed security firm Preventon has indicated that retired people now account for two-fifths of IT security purchases (in the home user market) in the UK, and that women are rapidly closing the gender gap.
According to Preventon, the proportion of purchases made by women increased by 11.2 per cent year-on-year during 2002-2004 - a rate that would see women overtake men as the primary purchasers of IT security services by 2007 should this trend continue.
Within the 'retired' category women accounted for 53% of IT security software purchasers.
So it seems the days of the Women's Institute members meeting to discuss recipes for feather-light pastry and flower arranging are over and we're more likely to find groups of Internet-savvy over-60s comparing the latest virus removal tools.
