UN aims to bring spam under control by 2007.
Representatives of the United Nation's International Telecommunications Union (ITU) meeting in Geneva this week as part of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) have said that the battle against spam can be won in two years.
The ITU's WSIS Thematic Meeting on Countering Spam is being held over three days this week to discuss legislation that could enable governments to crack down on ISPs who allow spammers to use their systems.
Robert Horton, of the Australian Communications Authority, said: "If we achieve full international cooperation among governments and software companies, this plague which affects so many of us in our everyday life will be defeated in short order." He also claimed that software makers and regulators have the means to bring spam under control within two years. "No one country can tackle this alone," he said. "It is an international threat and we must work together to defeat it."
This comes just days after the US, the UK and Australia signed an International Memorandum of Understanding on spam, allowing the three countries to coordinate their efforts against spammers.
